چکیده

This paper evaluates the gain in throughput achieved by the use of a shared buffer to realize the output queues of switching elements in the presence of self-similar multimedia traffic. Unlike previous studies, we focus on credit-based systems typical of networks used in parallel multimedia servers. It is generally believed that buffer sharing improves performance in the presence of non-uniform traffic. With self-similar traffic exhibiting burstiness over all time-scales, however, we show that buffer sharing is a superior design choice only when the total buffer capacity is more than a certain minimum threshold. We explain the non-trivial reasons for the existence of this threshold through an analysis based on head-of-line blocking probabilities. The results presented here have implications in switch design, especially in systems where the total buffering capacity may be limited.

Performance of Shared Output Queuing in Atm Switches under Self-similar Traffic

There is increasing evidence that multimedia traffic in a variety of networks including the Internet, exhibits properties of self-similarity such as long-range dependence and a high-degree of correlation between arrivals. The demands of self-similar traffic impose unique new requirements in switch design, especially as far as the buffering strategy is concerned. In this paper, we study buffer s...

Modeling and Simulation of Self-Similar Traffic for Wireless IP Networks

The paper examines self-similar properties of real telecommunications network traffic data over a wide range of time scales. These self-similar properties are very different from the properties of traditional models based on Poisson and Markov-modulated Poisson processes. The algorithms for modeling fixed-length sequence generators that are used to simulate self-similar behavior of wireless IP ...

Buffer Sharing for Proxy Caching of Streaming Sessions

With the falling price of the memory, an increasing number of multimedia servers and proxies are now equipped with a large memory space. Caching media objects in the memory of a proxy helps to reduce the network traffic, the disk I/O bandwidth requirement, and the data delivery latency. The running buffer approach and its alternatives are representative techniques to cache streaming data in the...

Performance Analysis of ATM Switches with Self-Similar Input Traffic

In this paper, the performance of ATM switches with self-similar input traffic is analyzed. The ATM switch is a non-blocking, output-buffered switch, and input traffic is approximated by a Poisson-Zeta process, which is an asymptotically second-order self-similar process. The upper and lower bounds of the buffer overflow probability of the switch are obtained by stochastically bounding the numb...
